Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
